By default, Claude only knows what's in your conversation. MCP (Model Context Protocol) is what lets Claude reach outside the chat window into the tools you actually use - your calendar, your email, your project management board, your files - so it can act on real, current information instead of what you happened to paste in.
The simplest way to think about it
An MCP connector is a bridge between Claude and a specific app. Once it's connected, Claude can read from that app (and sometimes write to it, with your permission) as part of answering your question or completing a task. "What's on my calendar tomorrow and do I have any conflicts?" only works if Claude can actually see your calendar - that's what a connector provides.
What becomes possible once you connect a few tools
- "Summarize everything that happened in the #product Slack channel this week."
- "Draft replies to my unread emails from clients, and leave the rest for me to handle."
- "Look at my open tickets in the project tracker and tell me what's overdue."
None of these are possible from a blank chat window. They're only possible once Claude has a live connection to where that information actually lives.
How to set this up without overexposing yourself
- Connect one tool at a time. Start with something low-stakes - a calendar or a read-only data source - before connecting anything that can send messages or spend money on your behalf.
- Review what each connector can actually do. Some are read-only, some can take actions. Know which is which before you rely on it.
- Keep sensitive actions in the confirm-before-sending category. For anything that sends an email, posts publicly, or spends money, treat "let Claude draft it" and "let Claude send it" as two very different levels of trust.
Why this matters more than it seems
Most of the genuinely time-saving Claude workflows - the ones that save hours, not minutes - depend on connected tools, not a better prompt. A perfectly worded prompt in a disconnected chat still can't see your actual inbox. This is the step that turns Claude from "a smart assistant I talk to" into "a smart assistant that already knows what's going on."
