Claude's pricing page lists five-ish options and none of them explain themselves in terms of "how you actually work." Here's the plain-English version, current as of August 2026 - always double check the live pricing page before you buy, since these numbers move.
Free
$0/month. Runs on Sonnet 5 - the same mid-tier model available on Pro, not a stripped-down version. The catch is volume: you'll hit message limits fast if you use Claude for more than occasional questions, and there's no Claude Code access. Fine for trying the product or very light use; frustrating as a daily driver.
Pro - $20/month ($17/month billed annually)
The default choice for most individual professionals. Meaningfully higher usage limits than Free, and - as of this year - every paid tier includes Claude Code, so you're not paying extra to get agentic/coding capability if you ever want it. If you're using Claude daily for writing, research, or analysis and keep bumping into Free's limits, this is where you land.
Max 5x and Max 20x - $100/month and $200/month
Same models as Pro, just dramatically more usage headroom - 5x and 20x a Pro plan's session limits, respectively. This tier makes sense specifically for heavy Claude Code users running long agentic sessions, or anyone who's routinely hitting Pro's ceiling mid-week. Most people don't need this; if you're not sure, you probably don't need it yet - upgrade when Pro actually starts limiting you, not before.
Team - roughly $20–25/seat (standard) or $100–125/seat (premium)
For 2+ people who want centralized billing and shared Projects rather than everyone expensing their own Pro plan separately. Premium seats add Claude Cowork and a much larger usage multiplier. Covered in more depth in Claude for Teams if you're the one setting this up for others.
Enterprise
Custom pricing, usage billed at API rates on top of a per-seat fee. This is a sales-conversation tier, not a self-serve signup - relevant once you're well past "a few people trying Claude" and into org-wide deployment with admin controls, SSO, and compliance requirements.
